There are a lot of superfoods avaialble in the sense that many natural foods and fresh fruits and vegetables are nutrient dense.

The five I have chosen are particularly useful as concentrated sources of nutrients that support a healthy bowel and enhance detoxification.

  1. Liver (raw organic from grass fed cows)

liver is one of the most nutrient dense food. It is an excellent source of high-quality protein and vitamin A. It cntains all the B vitamins in their easily absorbable forms, in particular natural vitamin B12 and folate. With the detoxification enzymes that are cencentrated in the liver those nutrient are specifically supportive of the detox processe and come with all the necessary co-factors such as copper, zinc and chromium. This make liver a very apt super food for detoxification
It is also exceptionally rich in CoQ10, a nutrient that is especially important for cardio-vascular function and cellular energy production as well as absorbable iron (unlike most supplements)
An other desirable quality of liver is that it provides bile which supports the digestion of fat and the absorbtion of fat soluble vitamines and essential fatty acids. It is also a necessary lubricant for the bowel and makes for easy elimination.

You can buy organic liver (cow, lamb or calf) from your butcher. The best way to prepare it is to keep it rare and cooked in butter. However if the whole idea makes you heave you can source dessicated liver powder but you must ensure that it is from clean animals. Radiant Life has an excellent track record but is only available from the US. They will ship to the UK however

  1. Chia and flax seeds

They both contain a type of  omega 3 fatty acid (alpha-linoleic-acid or ALA) which is better absobed if the seeds are ground. They are exceptional provider of a type of water soluble fibres (mucilage) which makes them very gentle stool bulkers and provide them with bowel healing properties and help lubricate the stools. They are also a very rich source of Lignan a type of anti-oxydant with interesting hormone-like capability. Depending on the situation it can have weak estrogenic activity or block the actions of estrogen in the body. For this reason, plant lignans are classified as phytoestrogens, and there has been much interest in the potential contribution of lignan-rich foods to reduced risk of hormone-related cancers. Plant lignans also increase concentration of sex hormone binding globulin, which blunts the effects of estrogen. These benefits were documented when 48 postmenopausal women consumed 7.5 g/day of ground flax seeds for 6 weeks, then 15 g for 6 weeks — and significant decreases in estradiol, estrone, and testosterone were noted with a bigger decrease in overweight and obese women who naturaly produce more estrogen from their fat cells and are more likely to develop breast cancer.

  1. Spirulina and broken cell wall chlorella
  2. Whey protein (concentrate and isolate from grass fed cow)
  3. Apple cider vinegar and fermented foods
